This is one of my favorite dance mixes. Lots of one-hit wonders on here, but great music.
Dance Mix 7 & 8
Control - Janet Jackson: Fun song, but not one that I play today.
Brand New Lover (12″ extended mix) - Dead or Alive: After discovering Dead or Alive’s previous work, I couldn’t wait for this album [...]

This dance mix is one of my all-time favorites. 1987 was a great year after 1984. The dance mixes were awesome. It was nice to have dance music evolve from the Bar-Kays and Five Star sound to Bananarama and Janet Jackson’s early stuff.
Dance Mix 6
Venus (12″ extended mix) - Bananarama: I loved this song. As [...]

My Dance Mix 5 tape always felt like a transition tape between Dance Mix 4 and 6. There were only a handful of songs that I loved on this tape. Everything else felt like filler. I barely remember Falco, Starpoint, and Five Starr. And James Brown’s song? What was I thinking?
Dance Mix 5
Restless- Starpoint: Eh…not [...]

In my latest Smart Lemming Rundown podcast, I discuss how much I love a new tool that I discovered in the book, Passion at Work.
I have seven projects that I spend my time on. I found myself feeling randomized, since I didn’t the structure I was looking for.
What should I work on Saturdays and Sundays? [...]

There were only seven songs on this tape that I still love today. The Jets emerged as an interesting family act. Their 12″ vinyl were always great mixes. I have no doubt that I had lots of personal drama going on in 1986, but at least I had good dance music to get through those [...]

It was January 18, 1986. I was only 23 years old, when I recorded this dance mix. My cassettes were meticulous, since I had a system or what I like say now, “a repeatable process” for making my tapes. I always had the title with some type of numeric reference, while I listed the recording date [...]

Music was an anchor for me growing up.
I remember the first album my parents bought me, The Partridge Family’s first album. Be kind, I was really little when I listened to The Partridge Family.
For some reason, when I was little, from from toddler to ten, I loved Diana Ross and the Supremes. So naturally, I [...]

Random thought of the day: comparing the two Star Wars trilogies.
One of my favorite commentary articles on Star Wars is titled “Generational Flap“ by Scott Bowles. I hadn’t thought of the inevitable comparisons between generations, comparing the old, original trilogy to the new one. I especially found the “Like father, like son” comparison of hands [...]

Random thought of the day: whatever happened to Rockstar? I’m not a big reality TV fan, unless I’m forced to watch it (thanks to SMMWT). There were only three shows that I actually enjoyed:
The Apprentice (seasons 1 when Bill Rancic won, season 3 when Kendra Todd, and season 4 when Randal Pinkett won)
Amazing Race (season [...]

Dear Mini-Lori,
Mini-Lori for Vice President
You’re finally in the 6th grade. You’ll run for Vice President of your school, which is surprising, considering how much you hate very public activities. Running for President is Jimmy, one of your classmates. He’s one of the smart, Caucasian kids in your class. You’ll assume you can use his name [...]

Dear Mini-Lori,
Goodbye Ponytails
You’re in Miss Hermes’ 5th grade class now. Yes, Miss Hermes was your brother’s teacher too. And yes, she’ll have the same expectations of you. You’ll learn that you don’t like to read. You really need to get over this and learn to love reading now rather than later. Trust me, you will [...]

Here I am, wondering why on earth I didn’t overnight Beatles Rockband from Amazon so I could have it delivered today. Until I read last week’s Entertainment Weekly (EW), I didn’t even know that The Beatles music was being digitally remastered and re-released. Do I live under a rock?!*!
Because of this, when I pre-ordered The [...]

Dear Mini-Lori,
3rd grade is a blur. Was it because of the tobogganing accident? You do have memories from the 4th grade. You try out for basketball and make the team. Around the second grade, your brother taught you basketball and tennis and you’re really good. You learn that you’re very competitive and this finally comes [...]
