I travel a lot, so I worry about plane crashes. I also live near an active volcano, so I often think, “If Mt. Rainer blows, will we survive?” While I doubt I’ll ever be in a plane crash (knock on wood) or see Mt. Rainer erupt (which would be kind of cool), I want to know what makes survivors tick. I’m currently reading Ben Sherwood’s new book The Survivors Club because I wanted to know the answers to the following questions:
- In tough times, who bounces back and who doesn’t?
- Who overcomes adversity and who gives up?
- What do survivors know about beating the odds that the rest of us don’t?
I’m halfway through the book and have learned that if I ever end up in cold water, I need to use the 1-10-1 system: I have one minute to get my breathing under control, ten minutes of meaningful movement, and one hour before I lose consciousness. I also learned that I only have 90 minutes to get out of the plane if it crashes or else I may be incinerated.
There are so many survivor rules left to learn, but I didn’t let that deter me from taking Sherwood’s Survivor Profile. I was pleased to learn that I am a Survivor. Apparently, I have a well-defined survivor personality and tools to help me overcome any crisis. There are several survivor profiles, but I happen to be a Fighter with instinct, ingenuity, and tenacity as tools that I’ll use in survival. Here’s my fighter profile from the Survivor Profile test:
It’s clear that you’re a Fighter. While fighters come in every size and shape, they share one critical trait: They attack adversity head on with purpose and determination. Against any odds, they’re driven to succeed and won’t stop until they achieve their goals.
When you’re a Fighter, you never stop attacking. Even at your lowest, you still find a way to bounce back and counterpunch. You have a passion for life and seize every day with zest and zeal. You have the willpower and determination to struggle, resist, and overcome even in the face of formidable opposition.
You get pumped up by the heat of battle. You push yourself to be the best. You’re motivated by a sense of purpose or a calling greater than yourself. You’re here on earth for a reason that’s worth real sacrifice. You’re resilient, tenacious and often feel stronger because you’ve endured hardship in the past. When you get knocked down, you bounce back again. You’re indomitable, psychologically tough and you can endure more physical pain and suffering than most. You keep going when others have given up and you battle to the very end. Above all, you’re a Fighter.
After reading the book and taking an exhaustive assessment, I feel like a survivor already!
Read the book, take the test, so you can learn what it takes to survive.
